Frequently asked questions

What is your traffic data?

Our traffic data is annual average daily counts collected from over 6,000 offices of transportation across the United States and Canada and from market studies undertaken by Kalibrate globally. This data is geocoded (latitude/longitude points added) and aggregated to create the largest historical traffic count dataset available.

How is it collected?

Kalibrate has a combination of automated processes which streamline the extraction, transformation, and loading of the data. This is supplemented by a team that reaches out to the numerous offices of transportation to collect the traffic data files, review them, and standardize them.

Isn’t this traffic data free?

It is free, however it comes in multiple formats from multiple sources that are collected and delivered at different periods. There are large gaps in the information and a lack of consistency. Kalibrate standardizes the data and turns it into information and insight by applying machine learning techniques. In this way, our data is truly useful, as it is based on a comprehensive and accurate dataset.

How can we use the data?

You can use our data for any project or product you have that can benefit from a comprehensive traffic data set. Our largest clients use this data for any demand-based modeling, and as a useful supplemental dataset to any existing data they already have. They typically operate in industries such as residential and commercial real estate development, retailers, out-of-home advertising, signage providers, network planners, and more.

What is GIS?

This stands for geographical information systems. Essentially this is any software that uses latitude/longitude for its data points and analytics. We utilize this software in combination with artificial intelligence modeling software to provide the most extensive traffic dataset available.

I saw your data sold elsewhere, how is what you sell different?

We provide the base information both directly and through resellers.

How much does it cost?

We have a few different options depending on how you use our data, how many users, and which geographies. Please contact us for prices.

Can you tell me how many cars go past (insert location here)?

The smallest area we will provide information for is a single zipcode/postcode. That will contain all of the granular street level information.

What are Published Counts and Current Year Estimated Counts?

TrafficMetrix® Published Traffic Counts database is published quarterly and included in our global database of over five million traffic counts. From urban six-lane highways to the smallest two-lane rural roads, we continuously update the accuracy of our traffic count intelligence.

Businesses that use TrafficMetrix® Published Counts can save thousands of hours it would normally take to standardize the data into a common format. Kalibrate collects raw data from 6000+ sources and turns it into valuable insight.

TrafficMetrix® Current Year Estimates are born of Kalibrate’s years of experience in artificial intelligence and machine learning methodologies. This unique forecasting technique enriches aged published traffic count data to be representative of the current year.

TrafficMetrix® Current Year Estimates address the need for current traffic count information in areas where updated information is not available. Research tells us that different factors influence traffic volume on different types of roads. As a result, we classify each traffic point based on road type — urban or rural — and level of traffic volume.

What is included in the data?

It is the raw data which includes a lat/long, street, cross street, year, direction, estimated count for current year (if purchased), and a traffic count(s) for the period that is being purchased.

The data is sent as a file of your choice via FTP from Kalibrate’s delivery team. You give us the contact and the data will be sent after you sign an agreement.

How is the data delivered? How are the updates delivered?

The initial file and all subsequent updates are sent via FTP to the designated delivery contact on your team. Updates are annual or quarterly (for Published Counts only) and for each update, a new file will be sent with all new points.

How accurate are the Current Year Estimates?

We have the most accurate estimates available in the marketplace given our extensive historical information. Based on studies, the difference between actual traffic counts and model-estimated traffic counts was 5.4%.
